Behind the Scenes: Creating a Gold-Foil Mug

A clean result starts with artwork preparation. Names and monograms are checked for length, contrast and placement before any production method is selected — gold foil in particular is unforgiving of last-minute changes, so getting the layout right at this stage saves a reprint later.

Font choice matters more than it looks like it should. A typeface that reads clearly at business-card size can turn illegible once scaled onto a curved mug surface, so proofing is done directly on a mock-up of the actual product, not just as flat artwork.

Proof before production

The customer-facing proof should show the exact spelling and intended position on the actual mug shape, not a flat rendering. Production should begin only after that proof is confirmed — this single step catches the majority of personalisation errors before they become a wasted piece.

Applying the foil

Gold foil is applied under heat and pressure, which means the ceramic surface has to be completely clean and dry beforehand — any residue shows up as an inconsistency in the finish. The foil is pressed only where the design calls for it, so sharp, deliberate edges depend on precise placement rather than a heavier hand.

Quality and care

The finished surface needs a visual inspection under direct light, checking for lifted edges or uneven coverage before it's approved for packaging appropriate to the technique used.

Gold-foil detailing is decorative rather than food-grade, so these pieces are finished with a wipe-clean care note rather than dishwasher instructions — a small trade-off for a finish that a standard printed mug can't achieve.
